my new favorite iPhone apps

photosnearhome my new favorite iPhone appsI stated yesterday by downloading and installing the iPhone firmware 2.0 and then playing in the App Store at iTunes. Yes, yesterday and today were big days for the iPhone.

I was predetermined to love Super Monkey Ball (and I do) but now I've found so much more to play with! During the course of the day, I downloaded AIM so I could have free chats on my iPhone without using SMS.

I downloaded Remote Control so I could control iTunes and my Apple TV from another room with iPhone, making it the most expensive, but coolest, remote control I've ever owned. Apple nailed that remote control thing! I guess that's one of the best examples I've seen of what can happen when the company makes the whole ecosystem.

I downloaded Whrrl, a location aware app that keeps up with things posted by my friends. So now when I need to find a restaurant nearby, I can look on my Whrrl app and see what's nearby that people I know have recommended. On a map. With little pushpins. It's a very cool application of social networking in the wild. And if this is a first pass, I can only imagine what the landscape will look like in a couple of years.

Of course, no iPhone will be complete without PhoneSaber. Similar to MacSaber, it allows me to use my iPhone as a toy light saber. The advantage is that it only takes one hand to swing it around in the air to make cool light saber noises (as opposed to two hands I have to use when I'm swinging my MacBook around). One friend has already remarked that he's gonna need a wrist strap, a la the Wii, so he doesn't actually throw his iPhone across the room…

I actually purchased OmniFocus. I've been using the Mac app for a while and am happy to see that I can now take my todo lists on the road with me. It has an added feature that it can reorder my todos for me automatically based on where I am. Yep, more location aware software.

And just before turning in for the night, I downloaded Exposure. It ties into my Flickr account and lets me manage that from my iPhone. It has another location aware thing that allows me to see photos "Near Me" that other folks have posted in their Flickr accounts. I find that amazingly cool. The picture with this post shows the screen when I asked it to show me photos near my bedroom.

Everything but Super Monkey Ball and OmniFocus were free. This is an ecosystem I'm gong to enjoy.

As a side note, I bet you never really expected me to make a post that used the word ecosystem twice…

Thanks for the post. I too spent the night seeking out the coolest apps I could find. Some of my favorites are ibeer (3bucks) and the super cool Shazam (free). The later can identify any song, be it on the raido, in a store, on tv, or your friend singing. And then finds it on itunes. No more wondering if to yourself "what was the name of that song" Waaaaaaay cool.
