Just don't look

KentBrockman3.gifWhenever I drive by a traffic accident, I want to turn and see what happened. When there's a kid in church making a bunch of noise, I want to look and see who it is. When there's a girl sitting behind me in the The Spiderwick Chronicles who keeps telling her mom she's really afraid, I really want to stare her down.

It's really hard to not look. Altho I manage most of the time. It's really none of my business.

But by the same token, if I don't look at the accident and make sure it's no one that I know, or if i don't look at the kid in church or the movies, in case they need some help or support, then am I doing a disservice?

I really don't like that the media in this nation has turned into a a bunch of people magazine readers, even on the news. I don't like that an informed Rachel Maddow interview about politics can be pre-empted nation-wide for pictures of a teenager's car that drove into a lake. I really hate that we are incensed by Britney or Paris or their little dog, but don't seem to care that millions of our neighbors are willing to support torture, or the war, or the oil companies.

What gives?

At some point, I am going to have to stand up and look around, even if it means moving out of my comfort zone. Is looking at the kid behind me in the movies the same as demanding sunshine laws on our federal government? I think it's all related somewhere, like the whole butterfly effect.

How's that for twisted logic?

Oh, yeah…. stand up and look around. Wouldn't it be very cool if you could swivel your head like an owl? And if you could swivel your head like an owl, you'll also need the steely owl-glare. Do that and you won't have to worry about anyone talking behind you.
