Attentional Adhesion

GetBent.jpgIt must be Valentines Day, all the web news sources are loaded with stories about couples and lovey-dovey stuff.

The best one I've seen (so far) is on CNN. It seems that Florida State University has done a study that concludes people like to look at attractive people. You gotta wonder how much money it cost them to come up with that.

Maner and his colleagues found that the study participants — all heterosexual men and women — fixated on highly attractive people within the first half-second of seeing them, even if it was someone of the same sex.

They discovered that "literally in the blink of an eye… we can detect attractiveness."

The whole study reminds me of the movie Flesh Gordon when the good old doctor got off the space ship, took a deep breath and said "Good, there's oxygen on this planet."

Let's send Florida State a certificate for discovering the obvious.

I have a friend who just sent this joke to me in email, and it seemed to fit in with this post and the State of Florida's findings:

I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected:
    A half-gallon of 2% milk,
    A carton of eggs,
    A quart of orange juice,
    A head of romaine lettuce,
A 2 lb. can of coffee, and
A 1 lb. package of bacon.

As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk was standing behind me watching and he said, “You must be single.”

I looked at the six items on the conveyor belt and saw nothing that could have tipped him off to the fact that I was indeed single. Curiosity getting the better of me, I replied, “Well, you know what, you're absolutely right. But how on earth did you know that?'

The drunk replied, “Because you're ugly.”
