Last night I went to a community screening of the original Superman movie in a park in Medford, Oregon. It was a lot of fun. I hadn't seen the movie since who knows when, probably 1980 or so.
Funny, I came down to southern Oregon to go to Tyler's wedding and ended up watching a multi-million dollar film about "Truth, Justice and the American Way" in a park for free. I wonder if the MPAA knows about that…
Anyway, back to impressions of the movie:
I was surprised at how many little pieces of dialog from that movie have worked their way into my normal speech pattern. They're not things I say every day, but they are things I say occasionally.
I was also amused by the extra scenes that had been added back to the movie that weren't in it last time I saw it. Yay team. None of them really added anything to the story, but they did manage to extend the presentation by about ten minutes.
Finally, the most amusing part of all, the screen was inflatable. Yes, the movie screen. Actually the screen was just a screen, but it was held up by an inflated framework. It was like one of those inflatable bouncy things you see for kids sometimes, where they go inside and jump around a while, only it was less three dimensional and instead of a mosquito screen wall, it had a movie screen. Sweet.
I have to say Christopher Reeve was not too hard on the eyes, either. I did find myself comparing pieces of the film to Smallville and wondering when the Smallville Season 5 DVD would be out. Don't blame me for comparing the two, I'm still waiting to see Tom Welling in tights.
So if you're ever in Medford, Oregon, and they are getting ready to screen Superman in the park, I recommend it.
