My new favorite song is Amsterdam
, by Griffin House.
Let me share some of the lyrics with you:
I went to Amsterdam
I got so lost
Down the way
I took the crooked path
I wish that I'd never stayed
of course, it's mellow and moody and perfect for 3AM tuneage. Not that I'm ever up at 3AM any more. But if I were…
I cannot change the past
Can I change?
Change the past?
It's like that Simpsons episode when Bart imagines his girlfriend drop kicking his heart into the waste basket.
Ticket in hand to leave
I sit on the train and think of you
Your face in the photograph
I run my finger down your cheek
I cannot change the past
Can I change?
Change the past?
And as if that isn't enough, then it ends with a final haunting refrain:
I cannot change the past
all of it's done
in Amsterdam
The really scary part is that the way he slurs the final two words, I'm not sure if he's singing "in Amsterdam" or "I'm still dyin". Seriously. I've listened to it about 40 times today and still haven't figured it out.
Somehow it does speak volumes to me, either way. I'll be buying everything else he does shortly…
