  • Sept 1, 2004: Welcome to September! Hopefully it will start cooling down a bit now that Fall is almost upon us.
Wahoo! skies are overcast right now. Even Bimbo is inside, eschewing the balcony as she does with it's below 70°.
  • Sept 2, 2004: Just in time for cooler weather, my new refrigerator starts in with the ice cubes.
It's so cool to actually have a working icemaker again, after only 20 years without one.
  • Sept 3, 2004: Tonight's Portland Movie of the Week: Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut @ 7:00 tonight @ Cinema 21. Be at the theater by 6:30 if you are meeting us there.
In the fall of 2001, an uncategorizable film opened quietly in Los Angeles, but was snuffed out by a number of factors, not the least of which were the events of September 11th. But Richard Kelly's film about the silent horrors of suburban life and alternative universes went on to lure a cult following.

Of the director's cut, Sean Axmaker of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, writes that this "wonderfully weird trip leaves you with meaty questions, both metaphysical and moral, and a journey… even more philosophically invigorating and emotionally intense," and Annlee Ellingson of Boxoffice adds that, "It's ultimately Kelly's inventive storytelling and the myriad of complex themes he explores that capture one's imagination and, in this reviewer's case, re-ignite one's passion for the medium."

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this, my favorite film.

  • Sept 6, 2004: Happy Labor Day!
"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day…is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
  • Sept 26, 2004: Mount St Helens may be planning to erupt again soon.
from CNN: SEATTLE, Washington (AP) — A strengthening series of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens prompted seismologists Sunday to warn that the once-devastating volcano may see a small explosion soon.
  • Sept 29, 2004: The U.S. Geological Survey issued a volcanic advisory Wednesday for Mount St. Helens with officials warning of a heightened possibility of a small to moderate eruption.
Late last week, seismologists began recording "swarms" of earthquake activity from the volcano — and the activity has increased since then.
