House Hunting

OK, so I've decided to buy a house. Yay!

Tomorrow I am spending the better part of the day with my real estate broker looking for the ideal place. This is the third trip out there looking.

If there's one thing I hate it's shopping. For so long I've been the guy who doesn't go to the store until he knows exactly what he needs, and when I pick that item up I buy it and go away. It drives me crazy to lolligag in a shopping center, looking at stuff I don't need right now, and trying to figure out if I might need it enough in the near enough future that it would justify buying it now, even though it's not what I came to get. Somehow I just missed getting the shopping gene.

So imagine the hell I'm going through looking at houses. I think my agent has about 20 lined up for me to tour tomorrow. I'm dreading it. I know I have to do it, but I'm dreading it.

Not only do I have to go shopping, but I have to do it without knowing exactly what I want, and without knowing exactly what's available. So I like this place, but it'd be better if it had a porch. Nice porch on this one but it's only 2 bedrooms. I really would like it to have pine trees in the backyard. How much did you say this one is?

Here's what I know I like (if you're selling one of these, send me email right away!)

  • Multi-family unit (so I can produce income from the parts of the house I don't live in)
  • Three bedrooms in my unit
  • Big porch on the front, big deck on the back
  • Trees, trees and more trees (especially pine trees)
  • Several stories tall (2 stories with a basement on a hill)
  • Not too far away from Downtown Portland (maybe 15 minutes max)
  • Gay friendly neighborhood, with cute, good-natured neighbors

Is that too much to ask? Why can't Amazon.com sell houses. it'd be so much easier!
