New Zealand

Wow! What a trip! If you have got to this part of the website, then you have been through the pictures from Australia already. While Sydney and the Blue Mountains were cool, they didn't even compare to the rural lands of the South Island of New Zealand.

We started at Christchurch, drove through Lake Tekapo to Mount Cook, then on to Queenstown. After that we spent a day in Milford Sound, one of the most coolest places on earth. We finished up with a trip up the west coast and then on to Golden Bay with a two night stay at Autumn Farm.

If you like rural mountains and beaches, go here.

After spending our first day in New Zealand in Christchurch doing laundry and eating fish -n- chips, we took off for the back country.

Lake Tekapo was where we made camp that first night.

Sure enough, that tiny person in the middle of this inspired country side is Jim. If you look closely, you can tell he's smiling

Mount Cook Airlines

We chartered a plane and flew around the peak of Mt Cook. I guess you could say we got up close and personal with the mountain. It was worth every penny. I have about 30 more pictures of the mountain taken from the air. Too bad the internet is too slow to upload them all!

After flying around the peak at Mt Cook, the pilot headed right into the rocks, did a high bank curve, forcing us into the floor of the plane by pulling too many Gs, then spun onto the glacier that overlooks an 11,000 foot high cliff. Yes, we slid into a stop in a big lazy circle while we all found our own religion.

Anyway, we lived. Here's me & Jim standing next to the plane on Horace Walker Glacier.

You should have seen how the plane took off...

Sheep Xing
6 March 1998

Yes, the sheep really do walk across the roads in New Zealand. They say that there are 20 sheep for every citizen in the country.

Someone suggested the tourist board subsidizes the sheep walks so that the tourists will keep coming back.
