Here's an article about a 12 year old McDonalds burger. The author is clearly anti-McDonalds. But they make a powerful point.
The burger on the left is from 1996, the one on the right was just purchased. The 12 year old burger has not been frozen, or had any special treatment except that it was stored on the shelf in a plastic container. Go read the whole article.
I used to like McDonalds. Until about 5 minutes ago.

Oh nose! It's attack of the MUMMY BURGER!!!
BTW, putting it in a plastic container in a climate controlled environment (i.e. a house or school building) is special treatment. There is so much salt in your typical Mickey-D burger that it turns into a very crumbly beef jerky. There may be other preservatives, but with over 500mg of salt in each burger, I doubt you would need any.
Having said that, I haven't eaten at a McDonald's in over 10 years. It's on my list (along with KFC and Wendy's) of places I will only eat at if it is a choice between that and certain, imminent, death by starvation.
The one on the left actually looks tastier than the newer one.
